Bringing the brightest minds together

The United Arab Emirates and the National Institutes of Health in the United States Collaborative Research Initiative (UAE-NIH-CRI)

UAE-NIH Collaborative Awards 2023

The Al Jalila Foundation, together with The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and three United Arab Emirates (UAE) universities created the UAE-NIH Collaborative Research Initiative (UAE-NIH-CRI). The three partnering Universities are Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences, Khalifa University, and UAE University.

The UAE-NIH-CRI will support ongoing and new meritorious UAE-U.S. research cooperation.  It will foster cooperative research among UAE and U.S. investigators with shared priorities related to infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. It will also support building UAE capacity in biomedical research through scientific training opportunities. It is anticipated that the UAE-NIH-CRI will fund up to six meritorious awards over 3-years to support pioneering research collaborations among UAE and U.S. scientists, bringing the brightest minds together.

THE COUNCIL

A council comprising of members representing the five partnering organisations will oversee the UAE-NIH-CRI, review the scientific merit of applications, make funding recommendations, and review progress reports. The merit review process will be handled independently by a panel of unconflicted experts.

FUNDING

Each partner organization will provide funding of $250,000 per year for up to three years with a total collective investment of $3,750,000 for the 3-year program.

APPLICATION

The Request for Proposals (RFP) for the researchers to apply for the UAE-NIH-CRI awards was released on 31 August 2022 by CRDF Global, a non-governmental program implementation organization, and the application deadline is 16 December 2022. Grant recipients will be announced in the spring or early summer of 2023.
